The Student Union of Latvia in Collaboration with the Ombudsman’s Office and Berg Research Launches Survey on Experiences of Sexual Harassment in Higher Education Institutions
The Student Union of Latvia (LSA), in collaboration with the Ombudsman’s Office and Berg Research, launched a survey addressing experiences of sexual harassment in higher education institutions. This initiative arises from recent reports of sexual harassment within Latvian universities and the broader societal response, highlighting the need for a more in-depth exploration of this issue.
The survey, now closed, invited students, academic staff, and administrative personnel to participate, aiming to gather reliable data on incidents of unwanted sexual behavior over the past three years. The primary focus was to assess the prevalence and impact of sexual harassment in academic environments, as well as to improve institutional responses.
Anete Ilve, Head of the Anti-Discrimination Division at the Ombudsman’s Office, emphasized that this survey plays a crucial role in fostering a safe and respectful academic environment. It contributes to the development of effective behavioral guidelines, reporting mechanisms, and necessary support structures for those affected by sexual harassment.
The survey covered various forms of sexual harassment, including inappropriate remarks, unsolicited proposals, manipulation related to academic progress, and more severe actions. It also addressed the psychological and emotional consequences for victims, such as anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal. All data were collected anonymously and exclusively used for analytical purposes, ensuring participants’ privacy and legal protection.
